It's for people who use screen readers (software which reads out text aloud). Screen readers can't read word verification images, in the same way automatic spam commenting siftware can't read word verification images. So they put that there for people with screen readers so they can comment too. If you click it it reads out aloud some characters which you can type in.

Legendary! I did actually try to click but Firefox couldnt cope without a Quicktime update or something so I didn't bother!
